Visit Visas allow an individual to a short stay in the UK for up to 6 months with some exceptional categories allowing 12 months stay. However, there is circumstances that allow for a Visit Visa to be extended. For example if you are a undergoing medical treatment in the UK your visa will be extended for a further 6 months if you can show that you have already paid for treatment and can afford the medical treatment. Your doctor or NHS registered body would also have to provide evidence related to the treatment required.
A guest to the UK who has obtained a visit visa for less than 6 months may be able to apply for an extension of stay to bring their total stay up to 6 months.
If you wish to stay longer for a period longer than 6 months then one of the following grounds must be met:
- There are compassionate grounds e.g. family emergency such as a close family member has fallen ill or a death in the family
- You are unable to book a flight out of the UK due to unforeseen circumstances and you can produce evidence that you intended to book a flight and the application was made within the original period of leave.
- Your category of visit permits you to stay for a period longer than 12 months.
