If you are an EU citizen, you can apply for a permanent residence as long as you have stayed in the UK for 5 years or more. Unless you wish to sponsor your partner’s visa or apply for British citizenship, EU nationals do not need a permanent residence document to live in the UK,
According to the UK government, if you already have a permanent residence document, it will not be valid after 31 December 2020. However, you can apply for further settled status, if you want to keep living in the UK after June 2021. The ‘Settled status for EU citizens and their families’ is currently not fully open and is subject to approval by Parliament.

The EEA includes all countries in the EU and Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
Eu countries include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
Although Switzerland is not a member of neither EU nor EEA, Swiss citizens have the right to live, study and work in the UK just like any national from an EEA country.
If you are a citizen of any of the country mentioned, you are an EEA citizen.
If you are an EEA national who has been living in the UK for less than five years, you cannot apply for an EEA permanent residence certificate. However, you can apply for an EEA Registration Certificate.
- You need to be a citizen of an EEA country.
- You need to be employed, studying, seeking employment or have access to enough funds to support yourself.
- An EEA registration card will last for five years after which you can apply for permanent residence.

In 2016, the UK voted to withdraw from the EU by invoking Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. The exit day from the EU has been declared to be 29 March 2019. As of now, it is uncertain the future status of both the EEA Registration Certificate and permanent residence.
As according to the UK government a scheme will be opened fully by March 2019 which will allow, EU citizens to apply for a settled status which will allow them and their family to continue living to work and studying in the UK after June 2021. Details of this scheme are still subject to approval by parliament. Rights of European nations not in the EU including Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are still under negotiation.

If you successfully apply for permanent residence, you can use that document to apply for citizenship if you have lived in the UK for 6 years. If you are married to or are in a civil partnership with a British citizen or have already been living in the UK for more than 6 years, you can immediately apply for citizenship.
